COVID-19 is changing many aspects of our daily life. Incheon Airport is actively responding to COVID-19 with strict disease control and prevention. The airport declared itself as a COVID-19 FREE AIRPORT in the early days of COVID-19, has strengthened disease control and prevention and disinfection throughout its facilities, and focuses on conducting thorough surveys, fever checks, and monitoring in the entry/exit procedures to early detect anyone with symptoms and take action quickly.
As a new procedure has been put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we will introduce what specific procedures arriving/departing passengers will go through in Incheon Airport through the entry/exit workflow!
‘3-step fever check’ for any departing passengers
Although special travel advisories have been issued around the world as COVID-19 keeps spreading, some people must go overseas due to business or other reasons.
Some may drive or take a taxi to go to the airport, while others may use public transport. To help you get to the airport safely, we mandate mask-wearing in Airport Limousine Buses and the Airport Railroad Express and make hand sanitizers available inside. So there is no need to worry!
1) Health screening certificate at terminal (*Departing passenger for the US)
There is something you must do when you get to the terminal safely. That is to get a health screening certificate. To get a health screening certificate, you must submit a health questionnaire and confirm that you have no symptoms.
Tick off whether you have any COVID-19 symptoms, have visited any hospital where there is a confirmed COVID-19 patient, took a COVID-19 test, and contacted or looked after a confirmed COVID-19 patient. When you submit your questionnaire to staff in the booth after ticking them off, you receive a “health screening certificate”
Submit this health screening certificate to the counter during check-in. Although it may differ depending on the airline, you will usually receive a sticker, which means you have submitted the certificate. You can also submit it before boarding. For more information, contact your airline.
2) 1st contactless fever check during check-in
While we recommend using kiosk & web mobile check-in, which can be used contactless for safety precautions, there is no cause for concern if you need a face-to-face check-in! There are signs on the floor to help you to social distance while waiting for your check-in.
As one of COVID-19’s major symptoms is fever, fever check is very important. To conduct a fever check safely and easily, Incheon Airport has recently introduced a contactless fever check service. Of particular note, it is characterized through the use of robots and kiosks.
How to use them? It is simple. If you approach a robot, its thermal imaging camera automatically measures your body temperature. If any abnormal fever is detected, its screen advises on actions to take when you have any symptoms, including contacting the airline. It features contactless hand sanitizing. Four ‘fever check robots’ (3 in Terminal 1 and 1 in Terminal 2) have been installed near departure check-in counters in Incheon Airport. One ‘fever check kiosk’ is established each near Terminals 1 and 2, always checking for any fever in multiple passengers nearby and sounding an alarm if any abnormal fever is detected.
If you tote around hundreds of masks in your carry-on just in case, please note! Did you know that you cannot send masks as your baggage due to mask regulations, and there is a limit on the number of masks that you can bring outside the country depending on their type? Since customs check whether you bring masks before security inspections, make sure to check beforehand!
3) 2nd fever check before entering the security area
There is another fever check in the departure area before entering the security area. If your temperature is above 37.5 ℃, your ticket will get canceled by the airline for your particular route as requested by the other country (travel restriction for anyone with fever), and you will be escorted to Exit Screening Station in the airport to receive an epidemiological test.
4) Mask declaration to customs before security check
There is a place to declare to customs when you get to the security check. It helps to get through quickly if you know mask regulations in advance. While there is no limit on the number of single-use (non-woven fabric) masks, there is a limit on the number of dental and KF masks you can bring outside.
Any departing passenger who travels for less than 1 month is allowed to have 30 masks, and you can have up to 90 masks if you prove that you are planning to travel for a long time or reside abroad. You cannot put any masks in checked baggage, and to avoid wasting time in a customs procedure, we recommend carrying your masks on board.
5) 3rd fever check before boarding aircraft
We should not let our guard down till the end. There is a final fever check at the boarding gate before you enter your aircraft. During this process, you may be rejected from boarding the aircraft if you are suspected of any COVID-19 symptom. Even though it may be somewhat inconvenient, it requires active cooperation from passengers to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
6) Distancing in seats on board
The airplane is no exception when it comes to disease control and prevention. Each airline is focusing on strengthening disinfection and allowing for enough space to ensure passenger safety. They clean and disinfect seats, consoles, screens at the back of seats, windows, doors, washrooms, and other parts where passengers often come into contact with. Meanwhile, they take additional actions such as emptying the middle seats, ensuring distancing between seats or allocating seats at a distance so that passengers can feel safe when they use the aircraft.
“Special entry procedure” for any arriving passenger
“Special entry procedure” is in place for any arriving passenger.
The special entry procedure refers to receiving any arriving passenger’s health questionnaire at the time of entry, checking their address and contact information in Korea, and monitoring their health condition for 14 days through a mobile self-diagnosis app. This is a necessary measure to protect arriving passengers and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in local communities by early detecting whether arriving passengers are infected.
Any arriving passenger is required to comply with this special entry procedure. Let’s take a look at the workflow.
1) Fill out “health questionnaire” & “travel record declaration” on board
Before entry, you will hear simple instructions about the special entry procedure on board and receive two documents: ‘health questionnaire’ and ‘travel record declaration’. All you need to do is to fill them out.
2) Submit paperwork and undergo a fever check at screening in the arrival area
When you walk along after getting off your airplane, you get to “Quarantine – Report upon entering from regions with a high risk of infectious diseases”. Submit your questionnaire and declaration here that you filled out on board. After checking whether you have any symptoms and receiving a fever check, you move on to the next step.
3) Install “Self-diagnosis app” and check “emergency contact”
Install the designated “self-diagnosis app” as instructed by staff. When you install the app and register your information, such registered information is checked. In particular, there is a procedure that verifies contact information to strictly control any infectious disease. Staff checks whether your number is available, a call can be made, and your guardian’s number actually belongs to your guardian.
4) Move along the route designated for passengers from overseas and use transportation
Claim your baggage, get past customs, and move along as escorted. Then you get to a transportation information center near the airport’s exit. When your family or acquaintance comes to pick you up, you can go home immediately. But there is some restrictions if you use public transport. Passengers from overseas cannot use Airport Railroad Express but can use each local government’s transport buses, designated buses for passengers from overseas, or designated cars in KTX. Recently, designated taxis are also available. So, you can also use them depending on your situation.
Incheon Airport has an infectious disease control system with systematic prevention and control and supports you 24/7 to help you travel as necessary while preventing any infection. Until COVID-19 is completely over, Incheon Airport will do its best as a safe and clean airport!
