Incheon Airport is also striving for sustainable management by establishing a vision for eco-friendly management and converting into an energy-independent airport. In this post, we’ll tell you about the blueprints of Incheon Airport for realizing corporate social responsibility and what we have been working on!
Incheon Airport’s vision for eco-friendly management and 4 major initiatives
A crystal-clear vision can function as a strong motivation of behavior. While continuing our innovations on converging the Industry 4.0 and fostering the services as an international airport, Incheon Airport is placing great importance in its vision as a global-leading, low-carbon and eco-friendly airport.
Incheon Airport’s 4 major initiatives that support its vision are specific missions made to accomplish the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They include 1) Advancement of eco-friendly management, 2) Improvement of energy efficiency, 3) Increased low-carbon operations, and 4) Reinforced management of environmental resources.
- While the “advancement of eco-friendly management” focuses on improving the energy management system and the management structure,
- “Improvement of energy efficiency” looks for specific ways to strengthen energy efficiency and implementing new energies.
- For “increased low-carbon operations,” innovative measures such as an expanded eco-friendly traffic system or carbon offset programs will be implemented,
- As well as focusing on strengthening the management of environmental resources that monitor and manage the above.
Incheon Airport is also engaging in activities that share environmental values with the world. Incheon Airport regularly publishes its environmental reports and participates in activities to keep the environment clean!
Incheon Airport’s 4 major initiatives
1) Advancement of eco-friendly management
Let’s find out what Incheon Airport is doing to become an eco-friendly airport! Incheon Airport is in pursuit of being a “Green, Eco, Smart Airport,” and decorated spaces according to these themes.
To be a green airport, Incheon Airport created eco-friendly and ecological foundation and experiential spaces, as well as a green space in the east and west sides of Terminal 2. To be an eco airport, Incheon Airport installed solar energy generators on the rooftop of the terminal to shed natural lights inside the airport. Finally, to be a smart airport, Incheon Airport applied the latest information and communications technology (ICT) and installed a greenhouse inventory that can effectively reduce carbon emissions.
Like this, Incheon Airport has been focusing on projects to improve the airport environment through activities for reducing particulates, noises, and carbon emissions. This is how Incheon Airport is now able to provide smart services with eco-friendly and the latest ICT technologies applied from the airport entrance!
2) Improvement of energy efficiency
In Incheon Airport, there’s a department in charge of the measurement of environmental quality within the airport by monitoring the atmosphere, aircraft noise, water quality, and indoor air quality for 24 hours a day.
Incheon Airport operates a remote monitoring system to watch the outlets of water treatment facilities and prevent the leak of pollutants by inspecting the main waterways of the airport.
At the same time, Incheon Airport increased the recycling rate of waste up to 69 percent from 2019 and strive for the reuse of waste, sanitary sewage, and water resources through systematic management of the resource recovery facility, resource sorting facility, and graywater facility.
3) Reinforced management of environmental resources
Let’s not forget about energy management. Incheon Airport uses a building energy management system that shares data of energy use in real time to analyze the pattern of energy use within the airport and reduce it by finding out from which areas the airport is unnecessarily wasting energy.
Another important point related to energy management is Incheon Airport’s effort to strengthening an energy-independent foundation. Incheon Airport is actively working on a paradigm shift for new and renewable energy needed for airport operations through expanding and applying new and renewable energy of the phase 4 construction of Incheon Airport and increasing solar energy generators.
There are detailed tasks that are conducted along for saving energy and improving energy efficiency. Incheon Airport is continuously setting a goal for reducing energy use and discovering areas for reduction in each department. Incheon Airport has also replaced facilities with high energy-efficiency equipment, practices energy saving, uses new and renewable energy, and promotes energy saving to companies stationed in the airport. Thanks to these endeavors, Incheon Airport achieved great results like the following!
4) Increased low-carbon operations
To expand low-carbon operations, Incheon Airport proposed the operation of the airport collaborative decision-making (A-CDM), establishment of eco-friendly traffic system, and minimization of carbon footprints with the objective to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from aircrafts.
Firstly, A-CDM is a single system that exchanges the time information of flight movements to predict flight operation times and manage target times. This system allows enhanced airport capacity, control the take-off times, and reduce waiting hours. This cutting-edge system optimized the management of resources, such as fuel, equipment, and human resources, reducing the amount of fuel used on the ground as well as carbon emissions.
In addition, like you can see from the image above, Incheon Airport established an eco-friendly traffic infrastructure and charging stations for electric cars with the aim to reduce carbon emissions from means of transportation. Incheon Airport will be implementing low emission cars, such as electric cars, hybrid cars, and compressed natural gas buses, for some of the airport’s official vehicles.
Finally, Incheon Airport strives to reduce its carbon footprint. Like in the image above, Incheon Airport monitors the greenhouse gas that is discharged directly and indirectly during our airport operations and works on reducing the amount of emissions.
